Excerpt from Alabama governor hires Birmingham law firm for oil spill work; Troy King says there’s a conflict, Press-Register, September 3, 2010:

Alabama Attorney General Troy King said… “The governor [Bob Riley] has done everything he can to interfere and impede our work to protect the state’s interests.”

Riley has maintained that the civil suits are premature because BP has not yet been given a chance to pay the state’s damage claims. He blocked King from using taxpayer funds to hire private lawyers to work on the litigation.

King, who is moving forward with the help of attorneys who agreed to work on the case for free, said time is of the essence. He said a judge in Texas has set a November deadline for filing claims against Transocean, the company that owned the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig that exploded April 20.

“Alabama is in great peril right now in a way that could affect the state for generations and generations to come,” King said.
