Israel’s health ministry has admitted to the human rights violation of secretly putting a birth control drug in inoculations injected into female Ethiopian Jewish immigrants to reduce their birthrate and control the immigrant population.
A government official has for the first time admitted that Israel has practiced injecting women of Ethiopian origin with the long-acting contraceptive Depo-Provera.
"They told us they are inoculations," said one of the women interviewed. "They told us people who frequently give birth suffer."
The practice is a grave violation of the right to self-determination.
"We took it every three months. We said we didn't want to," the inoculated woman stated.
Depo-Provera, a prescription drug, is thought to be highly effective for birth control. Adverse side-effects include menstrual irregularities, weight fluctuation, depression, hair loss, headaches and skin blemishes.
Health Ministry Director General Prof. Ron Gamzu has instructed four health maintenance organizations to stop the practice of injecting the birth control drug.
For five years the ministry and other state agencies have denied knowledge or responsibility for the practice.
The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) and several organizations have demanded that the injections cease immediately and an investigation be launched into the practice.
"The Israelis learned well from the Nazis - ethnic cleansing of Ethiopians and genocide of the Palestinians," a Reader Supported News commenter wrote about the forced population control practice.
Israel is home to the largest Jewish-Ethiopian community in the world with over 120,000 Beta Israelis live in the country.

In April 2011, vaccine human rights were upheld in a Belgium court that ruled against mandatory polio vaccination law, an outdated law causing children to get polio instead of preventing it, studies show.
